Lonely thirtysomething Rose (an astonishingly great Maeve Higgins) is a driving instructor in a rural Irish town. It’s not an especially rewarding gig, but it’s all she can do to get away from her true calling — that of a paranormal “sensitive”, daughter of a famous departed TV medium. She’s become accustomed to seeing spiritual activity that others are blessedly oblivious to, and she’s quite happy to keep it private. This becomes rather difficult when past-his-prime rock star Christian Winter (an especially bonkers Will Forte) comes to town, looking for a sacrificial victim to renew his Satanic pact for one hell of a come-back album. A whole lot of supernatural craziness is about to put Rose to the test.

One of the most exhilaratingly funny and endearing comedy/occult creations in recent years, EXTRA ORDINARY is an inventive paranormal miracle fully befitting of its title. Smartly kooky and consistently surprising, it’s the acclaimed feature debut of filmmakers Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, birthed out of Frontières, and wow, does it deliver. Equally adept with sweet-natured, character-driven comedy, and outlandish gags and situations, be it a mounted animal head crying tears of 7-Up or a haunted recycling bin, the film flows with a quirky energy and personality that’s an absolute blast to experience. At its centre, Higgins is a revelation, the adored comic/author/podcaster carrying the film with such individualistic charm that you’ll want to see her starring in just about everything. Audiences have been screaming with laughter at the film’s international fest showings. We expect its Fantasia landing to level an entire block. – Mitch Davis
