PRESIDENT OF THE FESTIVAL

I am pleased to welcome you to this 23rd edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival.

The programming team is very proud to offer you again this year a selection of features and short films, as well as several special events.

Our programming will, I am sure, delight festivalgoers, including many journalists from here and abroad who bear witness to Fantasia's leading position among the major international genre film festivals.

Genre cinema and series predominate around the world, and continue to generate a level of excitement that is now universally recognized, even at the biggest film festivals such as Cannes, Toronto, Venice and Berlin. It is also remarkable how, both in Canada and in Quebec in particular, our creators are producing an increasing number of high-quality genre works. This is also reflected in the growing interest and support of our institutions towards film and TV productions and projects that rely on fantasy and the imagination. Fantasia is now recognized by the international industry as an exceptional promotional springboard for a type of cinema that is watched by hundreds of millions of viewers, especially on platforms like Netflix. It should be noted that the first Quebec film that Netflix acquired was Robin Aubert's LES AFFAMÉS, and that their first Quebec production, JUSQU'AU DÉCLIN by Patrice Laliberté, which is currently in post-production, is also a genre film — a "northern thriller".

In addition to its promotional role, for several years the Fantasia festival has played a significant role in contributing to film production, thanks to its Frontières co- production market, which has been growing since its creation in 2012. The year 2019 marks the third year of our partnership with the Cannes Film Market, with which we are producing three events that promote the production of genre films internationally, and in particular between North America and Europe.

Last February, we again organized the Financing and Project Development Forum in Amsterdam. In May, we organized events at the Cannes Film Market, including presentations of film clips in production and networking events for the international genre film industry. The activities organized by Frontières have been a great success. The third installment of our Frontières co-production market will host, as part of the Fantasia festival, more than 400 international industry representatives, who will meet in Montreal from July 18 to 21.

I want to thank our new sponsors, as well as those who have been loyal to us for many years. Thanks to our institutional partners, whose significant contributions allow Fantasia to remain among the most important genre film festivals in the world. If there is one reason that can explain the success of the event over the past 23 years, it is without a doubt the passion with which this community as a whole is working, to offer, simply put, the best possible experience for our amazing audience.

Welcome back to Planet Fantasia. Our 23rd spin! Greetings as well to the dear, adventurous newcomers. Things are about to heat up as we prepare for blast-off on a three-week journey of bold, genre storytelling and singular works of cinema that will leave you breathless and amazed.

As the world continues to spiral into increasingly destructive places, genre cinema is more vital than ever. Not as a form of escapism, though it can certainly be that, but as a source of commentary. Of catharsis. Of confrontation. From the dawn of cinema, the genre has been at its strongest when addressing uncomfortable societal truths and this year’s lineup features no shortage of thought-provoking works with strong points-of-view that truly don’t hold back. Do they ever resonate. Of course, there are also loads of films here that are just wildly great times. We do love a party and Fantasia is a celebration.

Explore the lineup and experiment. As we always say, this is a place where risk is rewarded, in that we specifically seek out filmmakers who take unconventional chances. You will regularly have your most exciting experiences when you roll the ticket-buying dice on unknown pleasures.

Prepare to meet an extraordinary array of new talents whose work you’ll be following for years to come. This, alongside new visions from established auteurs Hideo Nakata, Larry Fessenden, Jennifer Reeder, Nobuhiro Yamashita, Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala, Yuen Wo-Ping, Bruce McDonald, Christoffer Boe, Lorcan Finnegan, Masaaki Yuasa, Gabriela Amaral Almeida, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, Shinsuke Sato, Malik Bader, Kimo Stamboel, Hideki Takeuchi, Bobby Miller, Riley Stearns, Zhang Yimou, Adolfo Borinaga Alix Jr, Lee Su-jin, Kim Longinotto, Joe Begos, Shinobu Yaguchi, Miguel Llansó, Richard Bates Jr, Syllas Tzoumerkas, David Gregory, Adam Egypt Mortimer, Yuichi Fukuda, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Rob Grant, Abner Pastoll and Brett & Drew Pierce, to name a few. We’ll also be unveiling numerous World Premiere screenings of breathtaking genre film restorations that should absolutely not be missed.

All this, plus a Lifetime Achievement Award for Edward R. Pressman (along with a masterclass!), an inaugural Canadian Trailblazer Award for Ted Kotcheff and a Denis Héroux Award for Roger Cantin. Not to mention a live orchestral performance of Joe Hisaishi scores from the films of Studio Ghibli by the OVMF, a special evening with Joe Bob Briggs presented by the good people at Shudder, a master class with Keita Amemiyaa, a multimedia book launch event with Michael Gingold and a day-long bus tour of landmark Montreal genre film locations from the tax shelter era, put together by Spectacular Optical and the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies.

That’s just a fraction of what’s coming.

This programme guide you’re holding represents countless months of endeavor from a programming team who’ve searched far and wide to curate a varied lineup of atypical filmmaking from across the globe. Read through it carefully and with an open mind. Unforgettable, shared experiences await you. Experiences that will be as thrilling for you as for their makers, who are travelling in from just about everywhere in order to watch their creations come to life with you. We can’t wait for it all to begin.

Bienvenue à cette 23 e édition du Festival international de films Fantasia. À vous tous, cinéphiles boulimiques, enthousiastes et curieux, j’espère que vous êtes prêts à vous rassasier d’œuvres singulières recueillies aux quatre coins du monde; de ce que la culture populaire internationale peut inspirer de plus électrisant et enivrant; de cinéma d’auteur transcendant, parfois bouleversant, parfois troublant, et, surtout, de films de tous genres que vous n’aurez plus jamais la chance de voir sur grand écran, et ce, en compagnie du meilleur public qui soit. Nous avons hâte de vous revoir, de vous entendre, et de sentir votre fébrilité indescriptible!

Bien des films ont marqué le festival au cours de ces vingt-trois années, mais peu l’ont fait autant que RINGU deHideo Nakata. Présenté en première nord-américaine à Fantasia 1999, ce chef-d’œuvre du cinéma d’épouvante a bien entendu lancé la vague de J-horror qui a influencé le genre pendant plus d’une décennie. Mais peu savent que cette projection à Fantasia a directement mené à son remake américain par Gore Verbinski. Pour célébrer le 20 e anniversaire de cet événement, Fantasia 2019 s’ouvrira avec la première nord-américaine du film SADAKO qui marque le retour du réalisateur japonais à la franchise. Préparez-vous, le spectre vengeur vous réserve des surprises…

Le cinéma d’horreur est particulièrement présent cette année et il nous arrive des quatre coins de l’Extrême-Orient. Entamons avec les Philippines qui nous proposent la première mondiale de MYSTERY OF THE NIGHT, film inspiré du folklore et de l’histoire coloniale du pays, signé Adolfo Borinaga Alix Jr que nous aurons le privilège d’avoir avec nous. L’Indonésie est entre autres représentée par la première nord-américaine de DREADOUT de Kimo Stamboel qui viendra en personne crédibiliser enfin l’adaptation du jeu vidéo horrifique. La terrifiante Shirai-san de STARE, dévoilée en première mondiale, se mesurera à la légendaire Sadako pour le titre de fantôme le plus terrifiant du Japon.

Toutefois, Fantasia est bien loin de se résumer à l’horreur, et la cinéaste Kim Bora le prouvera en personne avec le majestueux récit initiatique HOUSE OF HUMMINGBIRD, son premier long métrage qui s’est attiré maints éloges et récompenses aux prestigieux festivals de Berlin et Tribeca. Dans BRAVE FATHER ONLINE – OUR STORY OF FINAL FANTASY XIV, le drame intimiste rencontre la culture populaire du jeu vidéo et sa première internationale sera introduite par le coréalisateur Kiyoshi Yamamoto. Le réalisme fantaisiste sera représenté par la cinéaste Yi Ok-seop et l’acteur-producteur Koo Kyo-hwan, des nôtres pour la première canadienne de MAGGIE, lauréat de prix à Busan et Osaka. Pour le drame familial teinté d’humour noir, ainsi que le cinéma indépendant japonais, on s’en remettra à Koichiro Oyama qui introduira la première internationale de HIS BAD BLOOD, gagnant du prix du public au Festival du film fantastique de Yubari. La comédie prend également une place de choix dans la programmation asiatique et chaque année, nous tentons même d’y ajouter une comédie musicale. Cette année, le méta DANCE WITH ME, une comédie musicale dotée d’un concept délirant signé Shinobu Yaguchi, que nous aurons le plaisir d’accueillir, et le rétro THE LEGEND OF THE STARDUST BROTHERS, en compagnie du cinéaste Makoto Tezuka, sauront vous faire danser et rire à mesure égale!

Nous ne pouvons oublier les fans d’action et NO MERCY en mettra plein la vue avec son héroïne badass vengeant les méfaits qu’on a fait vivre à sa sœur. Le réalisateur Lim Kyoung-tack sera à la première nord-américaine du film qui se tiendra dans le cadre de la section Action!. Puis, le légendaire réalisateur et scénariste Keita Amemiya, qui laissa sa marque sur les films de tokusatsu, viendra en personne pour la première internationale de GARO – UNDER THE MOONBOW en plus de nous faire l’honneur de présenter une classe de maître.

Finalement, nous mettrons encore une fois le court métrage en vitrine à Fantasia. La cinéaste, chorégraphe et danseuse Nao Yoshigai en sera la principale représentante asiatique alors que la section Caméra Lucida fera en sa présence la première rétrospective de son œuvre qui a récemment culminé avec une sélection à la Quinzaine des réalisateurs du Festival de Cannes pour le film GRAND BOUQUET.

Tout ça n’écorche que la surface des découvertes cinématographiques en provenance d’Asie qui vous attendent cette année. Vous pourrez en apprendre davantage sur toutes ces œuvres qui nous ont fait vibrer cette année sur notre site web et dans le programme que vous tenez. Vous y découvrirez tellement d’autres genres explorés et tellement d’autres coups de cœur de l’équipe.
