Yes! There really was a sequel to William Castle’s 1968 demonic chiller, ROSEMARY’S BABY. You’ve probably never heard of it because it was only broadcast in 1976 as a TV movie. Although no Polanski, director Sam O’Steen (editor of the original) did his best with the goofy script he was given, as did the impressive cast which includes Ruth Gordon from the original as well as Ray Milland, Patty Duke, Broderick Crawford, Donna Mills and George Maharis. The one performer who truly saves the film by doing a stellar job in the lead role as Satan’s son is Nova Scotia’s own Stephen McHattie (who has appeared in over 200 TV series episodes and feature films, including BRUCE MACDONALD’S DREAMLAND, screening at Fantasia 2019).
Not only is it a near-impossibility to see this film in a theatre, McHattie himself will be there in person to tell us why the devil he took on such an oddball movie. The exceedingly rare 16mm archival print to be screened will be preceded by an equally rare print of a forgotten 1970 Cannes prize-winning short film starring McHattie. As if all that is not enough, there will be little celluloid surprises that will have you screaming with joy like a demon baby. Catch this once-in-a-lifetime event or… be damned to hell! – Philippe Spurrell (C/FS)
