Some things change — Japan, for instance, following the alien invasion of Earth during the late Edo period. Some things stay the same — and it looks like the silver-haired samurai Gintoki Sakata, and his odd-job agency associates Shinpachi and Kagura, are in an all-too-familiar position, financially. They’re falling short of the rent, so they need to drum up some work for themselves. Their efforts lead to repeated brushes with the Shogun himself. At the same time, the special Shinsengumi security force is fractured by an internal power struggle. Swords will be drawn before all is said and done…
Fantasia’s screening of the first GINTAMA film, in 2017, was an otaku-riffic affair, with cosplay, a personal video message from director and cast, and a packed room going nuts. Join us again on a jaunt to the Japan that never was! Shun Oguri, a leading anime voice actor and on-screen star of LUPIN THE THIRD and much more, reprises the role of Gintoki, the “White Demon”, alongside familiar faces from the first film — and a couple of unexpected new ones. Madcap comedy maestro Yuichi Fukuda (HK: FORBIDDEN SUPERHERO) takes his second swing at the manga series by Hideaki Sorachi, and this time around, there’s no less loopy lunacy, anachronistic shocks and dingbat deconstructionism — what is it that the title says about “rules”? The swashbuckling swordfights are there, as is the costume design to die for, but what really makes the GINTAMA flicks so much fun is the steady rat-tat-tat of self-aware laughs and gratuitous anime references — the TOTORO and EVANGELION gags, for instance, are pure gold! – Rupert Bottenberg
