Kyung-min lives a quiet life, seemingly content with the routine her job provides and the safety of her busy apartment complex, until one day, when she begins to suspect that someone tried to break into her home. Given the mounting evidence and an imminent threat to her life, Kyung-min repeatedly seeks help only to be rebuffed at every turn. As the situation turns deadly, she finds she has no choice but to take matters into her own hands.

DOOR LOCK is a remake of Jaume Balagueró’s SLEEP TIGHT, which won the Best Screenplay award at Fantasia 2012. While the original offered a unique perspective drenched in its protagonist’s perversions, DOOR LOCK instead tells the story from the victim’s point of view. The result is a nail-biting thriller that feels deeply rooted in the female experience, deftly portraying a woman accustomed to hostility and dismissal who must rise up to defend herself. It’s radically different in its approach and its effect, and yet remains incredibly effective. Paranoia rapidly creeps in, and tensions escalate throughout the film, culminating in an intense climax that will have you on the edge of your seat. Director Lee Kwon knows how to steer the story in unexpected directions, crafting a relentless tale that will constantly keep you guessing. Actress Kong Hyo-Jin (CRUSH AND BLUSH) makes a return to Fantasia screens this summer, also appearing in HIT-AND-RUN SQUAD. Here, she delivers an incredible performance, one that’s both emotional and grounded in reality. Ultimately, DOOR LOCK feels like a sister piece to the original film, one that will thrill you, shock you, and have you looking under your bed before going to sleep. – Tania Morissette
